Maldives in January: weather, sea and what’s on (2027)
Dry-season sun, calm clear seas and high-season crowds. What January 2027 brings in the Maldives, from New Year and the first sunrise to snorkelling and prices.
January is one of the most reliable months to visit the Maldives. It sits in the dry northeast monsoon, so expect long sunny days, light winds, calm seas and clear water for snorkelling and diving. It is also high season, so book rooms and boat transfers early, especially for the first week of the year.
Weather in January
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) describes January to March as the dry season, the northeast monsoon. January is the start of its core. By January the north-east winds have usually settled in after the December changeover.
What that means on the ground:
- Sunshine: MMS says January, February and March average about 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day, more than any other part of the year.
- Rain: less than in the southwest monsoon (mid-May to November). A passing shower is still possible, but whole wet days are unusual.
- Temperature: around 30 to 31°C by day. MMS gives an average range of 25 to 32°C across the year, and nights stay warm.
- Wind: mostly from the north-east and usually light to moderate. It keeps the heat comfortable on the beach.
Rainfall rises from north to south, MMS notes, so the southern atolls can be a little wetter. For the full year, see the best time to visit the Maldives.
The sea in January
- Calm and clear. Light winds mean flat lagoons and gentle crossings. Underwater visibility is generally at its best in the dry season.
- Warm. The sea stays at about 28 to 29°C, so most snorkellers need nothing more than a rash vest.
- Small swell. Surf is generally small from November to February, with flat spells common.
Marine life in January
Research by the Manta Trust shows manta rays move with the monsoon. In the northeast monsoon they tend to feed on the western sides of the atolls, so in January a west-facing atoll edge gives better odds. The big gatherings at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll are a southwest-monsoon event, not a January one.
Whale sharks are found all year in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, according to the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. Turtles live on most reefs in every month, and calm, clear January days make them easier to spot. No sighting is ever guaranteed. See our guide to Maldives marine life for where and how to look.
What’s on in January 2027
New Year’s Day: Friday 1 January
New Year’s Day is a public holiday in the Maldives. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, which is also the first day of the Maldivian weekend. Practical effects:
- Government offices and banks are closed, so carry some rufiyaa.
- MTCC public ferries do not run on Fridays on most routes, so plan to travel by shared speedboat or arrive the day before.
- Shops and cafés on local islands close for a while around the Friday midday prayer.
The days around Christmas and New Year are the busiest of the whole year. Seats on shared speedboats and rooms on popular islands go first.
No Ramadan this January
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, so all of January falls before it. Cafés keep normal hours and island life runs at its usual pace. If you are planning ahead to January 2028, note that Ramadan that year is expected to start around 27 or 28 January 2028. Islamic dates are estimates until the new moon is sighted. Our guide to Maldives festivals and public holidays has the full calendar.
Crowds and prices
January is peak season. Prices across the country are usually higher from December to April, and January shares in that.
- First week: the most in demand, as the Christmas and New Year rush carries over. Expect fuller boats and the highest rates.
- Mid to late January: still high season, but often a little calmer once the holiday crowds go home.
- Book early: the best-value guesthouse rooms and shared transfers fill first. Taxes such as the Tourism GST and the green tax are added to room rates in every month.
What to do in January
Snorkelling
This is close to the ideal month. Calm water, strong sun and good visibility make house reefs and boat trips easy for beginners and families. See snorkelling in the Maldives.
Diving
Clear water makes January a favourite with divers. With mantas on the western sides of the atolls, ask your dive centre which sites suit the season. Read diving in the Maldives.
Surfing
January is not a surf month. Waves are generally small and flat spells are common. Experienced surfers usually come from March onwards; the surfing in the Maldives guide explains the season.
Beach and sandbank days
Flat seas mean sandbank picnics, sunset dolphin cruises and island-hopping trips are rarely cancelled. Still, leave a spare day.
On a local island in January: Dhiffushi
Dhiffushi, on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, is the easternmost inhabited island in the Maldives. That makes it one of the first places in the country to see the sun come up, and in January the sky is often clear for it.
On 1 January 2027, sunrise at Dhiffushi is usually just after 6am, so arrive by about 5:50am to be safe. East Beach faces straight out to the open ocean. It is not a bikini beach, so cover shoulders and knees, as in the village.
A few January tips for the island:
- Getting there: shared speedboats take 40 to 50 minutes from Malé and the airport. Because 1 January 2027 is a Friday, there is no public ferry that day.
- Cash: the island has a Bank of Maldives ATM that accepts foreign cards, but bring some rufiyaa in case of holiday demand.
- Mantas: they tend to feed on the eastern side of the atolls in the southwest monsoon, so January is not the main manta season around Dhiffushi. Snorkel and dolphin trips run as normal.
For month-by-month island advice, read the best time to visit Dhiffushi.
What to pack for January
- Sun protection: with 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day, bring reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- A rash vest: for long snorkels under a strong sun.
- Light, modest clothes: loose cotton or linen that covers shoulders and knees, for walking around local islands.
- A light layer: for air-conditioned rooms and early-morning boat rides.
- A small dry bag: for phones and cash on speedboats.
No heavy rain gear is needed.
January compared with December and February
December is the transition month: the weather is drying out, and Christmas makes it the most in-demand time of the year. February is often the driest month of all, but in 2027 Ramadan is expected to start around 8 February, which changes daytime life on local islands. January sits neatly between them: settled dry-season weather, with normal island routines.
Questions people ask
Is January a good time to visit the Maldives?
Yes. January falls in the dry northeast monsoon, which the Maldives Meteorological Service describes as the dry season. Expect about 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day, light winds, calm seas and warm water around 28 to 29°C. The main drawbacks are high-season prices and busy boats, especially in the first week after New Year, so book early.
Does it rain in the Maldives in January?
It can, but not often. January sits in the dry season, and rain is much less frequent than in the southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. When showers do come, they are usually short, with sunshine either side. Rainfall tends to be a little higher in the southern atolls than in the north and centre, so the Malé area is a good bet.
What is the sea temperature in the Maldives in January?
The sea stays at about 28 to 29°C, as it does for most of the year. That is warm enough to snorkel for an hour or more without a wetsuit. A rash vest is still useful, mainly to protect your back from the strong January sun rather than for warmth.
Can you surf in the Maldives in January?
Not really. Surf is generally small from November to February, and flat spells are common. Experienced surfers usually plan trips for March to October, with the biggest swells in June to August. If you are visiting in January, enjoy the calm water for snorkelling, diving and paddleboarding instead, and save surfing for another trip.
Is the Maldives expensive in January?
January is high season, so rates are usually higher than in the wet months from May to November. The first week, straight after New Year, is the most expensive and the busiest. Staying in a guesthouse on a local island keeps costs down. Remember that the Tourism GST and the green tax are added on top of room rates.
Where can I see the first sunrise of the year in the Maldives?
Dhiffushi, on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, is the easternmost inhabited island in the Maldives, so it is among the first places to see the sun rise. On 1 January 2027, sunrise is usually just after 6am. Watch from East Beach, which faces the open ocean, and dress modestly as it is not a bikini beach.
