October

Maldives in October: weather, sea, surf and mantas

October is late southwest monsoon: short showers, sunny spells, easing surf, mantas on the eastern atolls and fewer visitors. Here is what to expect and plan for.

In short

October is still in the southwest monsoon, so expect a mix of sunny spells and short, heavy showers, with the sea calmer on some days and choppy on others. It is one of the quieter, better-value months of the year. The surf is easing, mantas are still feeding on the eastern sides of the atolls, and as the month goes on there are often signs that the next dry season is on its way.

October weather in the Maldives

The Maldives Meteorological Service puts the southwest monsoon, the wet season known locally as *hulhangu*, from mid-May to November, with December as the transition month. So October is officially still wet season, even when it starts to feel otherwise.

Rain

Long-term Met Service and WMO averages for Malé (1981–2000) give October about 194 mm of rain, a touch less than September (199 mm) and below November (231 mm), which is usually the wettest month of the year there. So October is no dry month, but it is often a small step down from its neighbours.

  • Rain usually comes as short, heavy showers or squalls, with sunny spells in between. It is rarely wet all day.
  • Some Octobers are much wetter than average and some drier. The Met Service publishes a monthly outlook, so check it before you travel.

Sunshine, heat and wind

  • Sunshine: outside January to March, the Met Service gives about 7 to 9 hours a day.
  • Heat: hot and humid, with air around 30 to 31°C and warm nights.
  • Wind: the monsoon breeze still blows, and there are windy days. Later in the month calmer spells are more common, but don’t count on them.

The sea in October

The sea is what most affects your plans. Calm, glassy days come back more often than in the middle of the monsoon, but rough-sea days still happen.

  • Boat trips: speedboat crossings can be bumpy, and excursions, ferries and small boats are sometimes delayed or cancelled when the sea is rough. Spread your trips over several days.
  • Flights home: leave a spare half-day between a boat transfer and an international flight.
  • Visibility: can drop for a few days after heavy rain or strong swell.
  • Water: about 28 to 29°C; no wetsuit needed.

Surfing in October

October is the tail of the surf season. Surf forecasters and local surf guides generally describe September and October as the time when the swell eases, with a good balance of wave size and crowds. The bigger, more consistent swells of June to August have usually passed, and by November flat spells become common.

That suits intermediate surfers. All Maldivian waves are reef breaks over live coral, so beginners should only go out with a qualified guide on small days.

In North Malé Atoll, boats run to public breaks such as Chickens, Jailbreaks and Sultans. Read surfing in the Maldives for the regions and safety, and surfing near Dhiffushi for the breaks closest to us.

Mantas and marine life

Research by the Manta Trust shows that in the southwest monsoon, mantas tend to feed on the eastern sides of the atolls, where plankton is pushed and trapped. October is still in that season.

  • Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, a protected area inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve, is in its manta season from about May to November. Our best-time guide notes the gatherings usually peak around July to October. Only snorkelling is allowed, with limited numbers; check the current rules.
  • Whale sharks are found all year in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, according to the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. October is no exception, though the open-water crossing can be rough on windy days.
  • Turtles and dolphins are seen all year.

No sighting is ever guaranteed. Keep at least 3 metres from mantas and whale sharks, and never touch or chase them. See our guide to Maldives marine life for the full picture and the code of conduct.

What’s on in October 2027

October has no national public holidays. On the current estimates, the Islamic holidays of 2027 fall earlier in the year: the Day Maldives Embraced Islam around 2 or 3 September, and the next fixed dates are Victory Day on 3 November and Republic Day on 11 November. See Maldives festivals and public holidays for the full calendar.

For visitors it is an ordinary working month. Offices and banks keep normal hours, Sunday to Thursday. On Fridays, shops and cafés close for a while around the midday prayer, and most MTCC public ferry routes do not run.

Crowds and prices

October is one of the quieter months, between the European summer bump and the December to April peak.

  • Many guesthouses and resorts lower their rates in the wet season, and October is often one of the more affordable months, though this varies and is never guaranteed.
  • Autumn school half-terms in some European countries fall in late October, which can bring a small rise in demand in the last week or so.

Remember that taxes, including the 17% Tourism GST and the green tax, are added on top of room rates.

What to do in October

  • Surf the last of the season, especially if you are an intermediate.
  • Snorkel and dive on calmer days, and look for mantas on the eastern side of the atolls.
  • Take a sunset dolphin trip; spinner dolphins are seen all year.
  • Kitesurf or windsurf in sheltered lagoons on breezy days.
  • Slow down on a local island: walk the village and watch the evening football.

On a local island in October: Dhiffushi

Dhiffushi, the easternmost inhabited island, sits on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, about 37 km north-east of Malé. In October that position helps twice: manta trips on the eastern side of the atoll are worth asking about, and the North Malé surf breaks are a short boat ride south.

  • Getting there: a shared speedboat takes about 40 to 50 minutes from the airport or Malé. On rough days it can be slower and bumpier. The MTCC public ferry does not run on Fridays. See how to get to Dhiffushi.
  • Beaches: swimwear is for the designated bikini beach; elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees. Plan beach time flexibly around showers.

For the island month by month, read the best time to visit Dhiffushi.

Before and after October

Questions people ask

Is October a good time to visit the Maldives?

Yes, if you are happy with some rain. October is still officially in the southwest monsoon, so expect showers and the odd rough-sea day, but also plenty of sunshine, warm water and fewer visitors. It is often one of the more affordable months, and it suits intermediate surfers and manta trips on the eastern side of the atolls. Keep your boat plans flexible.

Does it rain a lot in the Maldives in October?

It can. Long-term Met Service and WMO averages for Malé give October about 194 mm, slightly less than September and below November, usually the wettest month. Most of it falls as short, heavy showers with sunny spells between, rather than all-day rain. Some Octobers are much wetter than average and some drier, so check the Met Service’s monthly outlook before you go.

Is the sea rough in the Maldives in October?

Sometimes. Calmer spells become more common as the monsoon winds down, but windy days with choppy seas still happen. Speedboat transfers can be bumpy, and excursions or ferries are occasionally cancelled. Spread boat trips over several days, bring seasickness tablets if you need them, and leave a spare half-day before your international flight.

Can you surf in the Maldives in October?

Yes. October is the end of the main surf season. Surf guides generally say the swell eases in September and October, after the peak swell of June to August, giving smaller waves and quieter line-ups. That suits intermediates well. All the waves are reef breaks over coral, so beginners should only surf with a qualified guide on small days.

Can you see manta rays in October?

Often, yes. In the southwest monsoon, the Manta Trust’s research shows mantas tend to feed on the eastern sides of the atolls, and Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is in its manta season from about May to November. Sightings are never guaranteed. Book with a guide who follows the code of conduct, and keep at least 3 metres from the animals.

Are there any public holidays in the Maldives in October?

No. In 2027 there are no national public holidays in October, so offices and banks keep normal hours. The weekend is Friday and Saturday, and shops close for a while around Friday midday prayer. The next holidays are Victory Day on 3 November and Republic Day on 11 November.
