Maldives in December: weather, Christmas and New Year

December weather, sea and prices in the Maldives, plus Christmas and New Year on a local island and the country’s first sunrise of 2027 at Dhiffushi.

In short

December is a good month to visit the Maldives, as long as you expect some rain and book early. It is the changeover month: the wet southwest monsoon gives way to the dry northeast monsoon, the sea starts to calm and peak season begins. Christmas and New Year are the busiest, most expensive fortnight of the whole year, while the first half of December is usually calmer and better value.

December weather in the Maldives

The Maldives Meteorological Service treats December as a transition month. The southwest monsoon (mid-May to November) is ending, and the dry northeast monsoon is setting in. Its core runs from January to March.

So December is not yet the dry season, and the long-term figures show it. Climate averages for Malé, published by the World Meteorological Organization from Met Service data (1981–2000), give December:

  • Rainfall: about 217 mm, spread over around 12 rain days
  • Daytime high: about 30°C
  • Night-time low: about 25°C
  • Sunshine: the Met Service puts most months outside January to March at around 7 to 9 hours a day

For comparison, the same figures give January about 114 mm and February only about 38 mm. In other words, December still carries plenty of wet-season rain on paper, and the real drop comes in the new year.

In practice, the Met Service notes that rain usually comes as short showers with sunny spells between. A squall may blow through in under an hour, then the sun returns. Whole wet days happen, but they are not the norm.

The wind swings round to the north-east during the month, and evenings can feel a little fresher. Curiously, the Maldives’ lowest recorded temperature, 18.2°C, was logged at Hanimaadhoo on 23 December 2002. Don’t pack a coat, though.

The sea in December

The sea stays warm, around 28 to 29°C, so you can swim and snorkel without a wetsuit.

As the northeast monsoon settles, the southern swell fades and the sea generally calms. Visibility tends to improve, though it can dip for a few days after heavy rain or wind. Crossings are usually smoother than mid-monsoon, but choppy days still happen, so leave a spare half-day before an international flight.

Marine life

  • Manta rays: research by the Manta Trust shows mantas tend to move to the western sides of the atolls in the northeast monsoon (about December to April). Ask about manta trips on the western side of your atoll.
  • Whale sharks: the South Ari Marine Protected Area is one of the few places in the world where they are found all year, according to the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme.
  • Turtles and dolphins: seen all year.

No sighting is ever guaranteed. Our marine life guide explains how to watch these protected animals.

What’s on in December 2026

There are no national public holidays in December, so offices, banks and boats run normally, apart from the usual Friday pause.

Fishermen’s Day, 10 December

Fishermen’s Day falls on Thursday 10 December. It honours the country’s fishing families, and official celebrations move to a different island each year. See our fishing guide for the story of pole-and-line tuna, and try a night fishing trip that week.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas is not a local holiday. The Maldives is a Muslim country, and on local islands 25 December is an ordinary day (in 2026 a Friday, with the usual midday prayer closures). Resorts often run their own festive programmes.

New Year’s Day, 1 January, is a public holiday. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, when most MTCC public ferry routes do not run. Plan your boat transfers around that.

For the full calendar, see Maldives festivals and public holidays.

Crowds and prices in December

December is the start of peak season, which runs roughly from December to April. But the month splits in two:

  • 1 to about 19 December: demand is building but rooms are easier to find. This is often the sweet spot for good weather at fairer prices.
  • About 20 December to early January: the most in-demand period of the year. Rooms, shared speedboat seats, domestic flights and international fares are at their highest and fill up early. Many places set minimum stays over the holidays.

For the festive fortnight, book months ahead and confirm your transfer with your room. Taxes come on top of room rates: 17% Tourism GST, a USD 6 per person per night green tax at small guesthouses, and often a 10% service charge.

Things to do in December

  • Beach days: plan beach time for the morning and keep a back-up for a passing shower.
  • Snorkelling: calmer seas suit house reefs and boat trips. See snorkelling in the Maldives.
  • Diving: channel dives get more comfortable as the swell drops. See our diving guide.
  • Surfing: the wrong month. Surf guides describe November to February as small and inconsistent; read surfing in the Maldives and aim for March to October.

On a local island in December: Dhiffushi as an example

Dhiffushi, on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll about 40–50 minutes by shared speedboat from the airport, is the easternmost inhabited island in the Maldives. That makes it a special place to end the year.

New Year’s Eve on a local island

Expect a quiet night. Alcohol is not sold or allowed on local islands, and there are no resort-style parties. This is a Muslim community going about its life, and many visitors love the calm: a good dinner, a walk under the stars, an early night. If a party with drinks matters to you, a resort or liveaboard is the place for that night. Our local island etiquette guide explains the rules.

The first sunrise of 2027

The real celebration comes at dawn. As the easternmost inhabited island, Dhiffushi sees the country’s sunrise first. On 1 January, walk to the East Beach before 6am (sunrise is roughly 5:55 to 6:10am) and watch the year begin over the open sea. It is a village beach, not a bikini beach, so cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low and wear reef shoes on the rocky shore. For more, read the best time to visit Dhiffushi.

What to pack for December

  • A light rain jacket or compact umbrella for showers.
  • Modest clothes for the village; swimwear for the bikini beach only.
  • Reef shoes for a rocky sunrise shore.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat: the sun is strong between showers.
  • A dry bag for boat trips, and a light layer for breezy dawns.

Our packing list for Dhiffushi has the rest.

December or January?

For drier weather, January is the safer bet: it is officially dry season, with roughly half of December’s average rainfall. Read the Maldives in January, or see the best time to visit the Maldives for the whole year.

Questions people ask

Is December a good time to visit the Maldives?

Yes, for most travellers. December is a transition month into the dry northeast monsoon, with warm seas around 28 to 29°C, calming conditions and plenty of sunshine between showers. It is still fairly wet on paper, with Malé averaging about 217 mm of rain over around 12 days. The first half of the month is usually better value than the Christmas and New Year period.

Does it rain a lot in the Maldives in December?

It can. Long-term averages for Malé show about 217 mm of rain in December, much more than January or February. But Maldivian rain usually comes as short showers with sunny spells between, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service, so a whole day lost to rain is unusual. Keep plans flexible and save boat trips for the clearest mornings.

How busy is the Maldives at Christmas and New Year?

Very busy. The two weeks from around 20 December to early January are the most in-demand period of the year. Rooms, shared speedboat seats, domestic flights and air fares cost the most and sell out early, and many places set minimum stays. Book months ahead and confirm your transfers at the same time. Local islands still never feel crowded.

Can you celebrate New Year’s Eve on a local island in the Maldives?

Quietly, yes. Alcohol is not allowed on local islands and there are no resort-style parties or fireworks, so expect a calm evening of dinner and stargazing. Please respect local rules. Many visitors make the morning the highlight instead: on 1 January, Dhiffushi’s East Beach sees the first sunrise in the Maldives. For a party with drinks, choose a resort or liveaboard that night.

What is the sea like in the Maldives in December?

The sea is warm, around 28 to 29°C, and generally calming as the southwest monsoon swell fades and the northeast monsoon sets in. Visibility for snorkelling and diving tends to improve towards the dry season, though rain or wind can cloud it for a few days. It is a poor month for surfing, with small, inconsistent waves until about March.
