Best time to visit Dhiffushi: monsoons month by month
Dry, calm January to March (with December and April usually good too), or quiet, surf-and-manta May to November? Dhiffushi’s weather, seas, crowds, Ramadan and Fridays, month by month.
The best time to visit Dhiffushi for calm seas, sunshine and clear water is January to March, the heart of the dry north-east monsoon; December and April, the changeover months, are usually good too. February is usually the driest and busiest month. If you would rather have fewer people, surf, mantas and lower demand for rooms, May to November is warm, greener and quieter, with more showers and choppier crossings.
It is warm all year. Air temperatures sit around 31°C and the sea around 29°C in every month, so the real choice is about rain, wind, sea state and crowds rather than heat.
The two monsoons, simply explained
The Maldives has two seasons, named after the winds that drive them.
- Iruvai (north-east monsoon). The dry season. The Maldives Meteorological Service puts its core from January to March, with December and April as changeover months. Expect long sunny days, light winds, flat seas and the best visibility underwater. The service notes daily sunshine of roughly 10 to 11 hours in these months.
- Hulhangu (south-west monsoon). The wet season, from about mid-May to November. Rain tends to come in heavy squalls rather than all-day drizzle. Winds are stronger and the sea is livelier, which suits surfers and kitesurfers.

Sea conditions and getting here
Dhiffushi sits on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, about 37 km north-east of Malé. A speedboat takes about 40–50 minutes. In the dry season the crossing is usually smooth. In the south-west monsoon it can be bumpy, and small boats and the public ferry may be delayed or cancelled in rough weather.
In the wet season, leave a spare half-day before any international flight home. The MTCC public ferry does not run on Fridays, whatever the season.
Diving and snorkelling
Visibility is generally at its best in the dry season, when the water is calmest and carries less plankton. This is the easiest time for beginners on the house reef and for clear photographs.
Mantas
Manta rays follow the plankton, and the plankton follows the monsoon. Research by the Manta Trust shows mantas gather mostly on the western side of the atolls during the north-east monsoon, then move to the eastern side during the south-west monsoon. As an east-rim island, Dhiffushi is well placed for nearby manta sites from about May to November. Ask locally about Manta Bay. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Whale sharks
The well-known whale shark area is the South Ari Marine Protected Area, a long way south-west of Dhiffushi. Whale sharks live there all year; calmer dry-season seas make the long journey more comfortable. Read more about the full-day whale shark and manta trip.
Keep at least a few metres from mantas and whale sharks, never touch them, and don’t use flash.
Surf season on the North Malé breaks
The south-west swell that roughens the sea also lights up the reef breaks south of Dhiffushi. The local surf season runs from roughly March to October, with the most consistent swell usually from June to August. Shoulder months bring smaller, less crowded waves. Cokes, off Thulusdhoo is for experienced surfers; Jailbreaks, Sultans and Honky’s are reached by surf boat.
From December to February the swell is small and the wind is less helpful, so plan a beach holiday instead. Windy months also suit kitesurfing.
Sunrise on the eastern rim
Dhiffushi is the easternmost inhabited island in the Maldives, so it sees the country’s first sunrise. Because the island is close to the equator, sunrise hardly moves: roughly 5:55 to 6:10am all year. Clear dawns are more likely from December to April. On 1 January, many visitors head to East Beach for the year’s first light. It is a village beach, so cover shoulders and knees.
Prices and crowds
Dhiffushi follows the national pattern. Official arrival figures show the Maldives is busiest from December to March, with May and June among the quietest months.
- Christmas and New Year. The most in-demand fortnight. Book rooms and transfers early and expect the highest rates.
- Chinese New Year. This falls in late January or February, at the peak of the dry season. Expect busy boats and excursions.
- European summer (July and August). Families travel despite the wet season, so this period can be busier than the months either side.
- May to June and September to October. Usually the quietest and most affordable time. Browse places to stay.
Ramadan and Eid on a local island
Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so it starts about 10 to 11 days earlier each year. In 2026 it began in mid-February. Astronomical estimates put the start of Ramadan 2027 around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March, and Eid al-Adha around 16 or 17 May 2027. Exact dates depend on the moon sighting and are confirmed only shortly before.
What changes on Dhiffushi:
- Many cafés and restaurants close in daylight hours and open from sunset, when the island comes to life.
- Guesthouses still feed their guests, usually discreetly. Check arrangements before you book.
- Don’t eat, drink or smoke in public spaces during the day.
- Eid brings family feasts, games and a festive atmosphere. Public holidays can mean busy boats from Malé.
More on our Ramadan and Eid page.
The Friday rhythm
Friday is the weekly holy day. Shops and cafés pause around midday prayer, and the island is quieter until mid-afternoon. The public ferry does not run on Fridays, so plan arrivals and departures by speedboat on that day. Alcohol is not available on local islands at any time of year, and swimwear is for the bikini beach.

Questions people ask
What is the best month to visit Dhiffushi?
For most travellers, February. It is usually the driest month, with calm seas, long sunny days and excellent visibility. It is also the island’s busiest month, so book ahead; January and March are nearly as good. If crowds matter more than sunshine, look at May or late October instead.
Is it worth visiting Dhiffushi in the rainy season?
Yes, for many people. Rain usually arrives in short, heavy squalls rather than lasting all day, and the sea stays around 29°C. The wet season brings quieter beaches, nearby mantas and the surf season. Choppier seas can make boat trips less comfortable and occasionally cancel them, so stay flexible and leave a buffer before your flight home.
When can I see manta rays near Dhiffushi?
Mantas move with the monsoon. During the south-west monsoon, from about May to November, they tend to gather on the eastern side of the atolls, which is where Dhiffushi sits. From December to April they shift mostly towards the western side. Sightings are never guaranteed.
When is surf season near Dhiffushi?
Roughly March to October, during the south-west monsoon. The biggest and most consistent swell usually comes from June to August, which suits experienced surfers at breaks such as Cokes. March, April and October bring smaller, friendlier waves and fewer people. From December to February the swell is generally too small for a dedicated surf trip.
What is Dhiffushi like during Ramadan?
Calm by day and lively after dark. Many local cafés close during daylight and reopen at sunset, while guesthouses continue to serve their guests discreetly. Visitors should avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day. Ramadan moves about 10 to 11 days earlier each year, so check the dates for your trip before booking.
Can I travel to Dhiffushi on a Friday?
Yes, but not by public ferry, which does not run on Fridays. Shared and private speedboats can usually take you instead, so ask your guesthouse to arrange one. Expect shops to pause for midday prayer.
What time is sunrise on Dhiffushi?
Usually between about 5:55 and 6:10am, with very little change through the year because the island lies close to the equator. As the easternmost inhabited island in the Maldives, Dhiffushi sees the country’s first sunrise. Clear skies at dawn are most likely from December to April.
