Maldives in April: weather, heat, sea and value
Hot, mostly calm and better value after Easter. Maldives weather in April 2027, sea and surf conditions, crowds, and how to stay cool on a local island.
April is one of the best-value months to visit the Maldives. It is hot, often the hottest month of the year, with mostly calm seas, long sunny spells and the occasional heavy shower. High season winds down after Easter, so April 2027 should bring a little more breathing room and better deals than February or March, plus the first proper surf of the year.
The weather in April
The Maldives Meteorological Service treats April as a transition month. The dry northeast monsoon (January to March) is fading, and the wet southwest monsoon normally arrives in mid-May. In between, the wind drops and turns. The weather is less predictable than in the dry season, but still largely sunny.
Heat
The Met Service names March and April as the warmest part of the year, a spell that lasts until the southwest monsoon sets in. Our own best time to visit the Maldives table marks April as the hottest month, and it usually feels that way:
- Afternoons sit around 31 to 32°C, at the top of the official average range of 25 to 32°C.
- Nights stay warm, rarely much below the mid-20s.
- Lighter winds mean less of the cooling breeze of January and February, and it feels humid.
Rain and sunshine
April is drier than the monsoon months but wetter than February. Expect mostly bright days with the odd afternoon or evening downpour, often short and heavy, sometimes with thunder. The Met Service’s monthly climate reports show that April rainfall swings a lot from year to year: some Aprils are almost dry, others are distinctly wet. Treat any rain as a pause, not a write-off.
Sunshine is still generous, though the Met Service’s figure of 10 to 11 hours a day applies to January to March; for the rest of the year it gives 7 to 9 hours.
Early April vs late April
- First half: close to dry-season weather. Calm, settled and very hot.
- Second half: more afternoon cloud and showers and, in some years, the first signs of the southwest monsoon: stronger south-westerly winds and a livelier sea in the last week or so.
For the calmest seas, go early; for surf, go later.
The sea in April
For most of the month the sea is calm, glassy at times, and about 29°C. Boat transfers are usually smooth, and trips are rarely cancelled.
Visibility is generally still good, though it can vary later in the month as the wind changes and plankton builds.
- Snorkelling and diving: good conditions on most days. The eastern sides of the atolls tend to have the clearest water from about December to April.
- Mantas: following the Manta Trust’s research pattern, mantas tend to feed on the western sides of the atolls in the northeast monsoon and move east with the southwest monsoon, roughly from May. April is the changeover, so ask locally which side is producing sightings. See Maldives marine life for the full picture.
- Turtles and reef fish: present all year, weather allowing.
Surf starts to pick up
Surf forecasters and local surf guides generally put the Maldives surf season at about March to October, with the biggest swells in June to August. In that framing, April is the early season: waves are usually smaller and cleaner than mid-year, winds are light and line-ups are quieter. It suits intermediate surfers who want friendly conditions more than big days.
Swell is never guaranteed, so check a surf forecast the week before. Read surfing in the Maldives for regions and how surf trips from local islands work.
What’s on in April 2027
April 2027 has no Maldivian public holidays. Based on astronomical estimates, Ramadan begins around 8 February and Eid al-Fitr falls around 9 or 10 March 2027, so both are over before April starts. Labour Day (1 May) and Eid al-Adha, expected around 16 or 17 May, come next month. In practice that means:
- Normal opening hours on local islands, with cafés open during the day.
- No holiday rush on boats from Malé.
The weekly rhythm still applies. Friday is the holy day: shops and cafés close for a while around midday prayer, and most MTCC public ferry routes do not run on Fridays. See Maldives festivals and public holidays for the full calendar.
Crowds and prices
Peak season in the Maldives runs roughly from December to April, and April is its tail end.
- Easter: Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, and some countries’ school holidays run into the first week or two of April. Expect that stretch to be busier.
- After Easter: demand usually eases. Guesthouses and boat trips are easier to book, and some places start offering shoulder-season rates, though this is never guaranteed.
- Late April: often good value, with weather that is still mostly fine.
Taxes and service charges are added on top of room rates.
What to do in April
- Beach days and sandbanks: flat, warm water. Swim early or late, and take shade to a sandbank.
- Snorkelling: easy entries and good visibility on most days. Start with snorkelling in the Maldives.
- Diving: settled conditions for channel dives before the monsoon changes the pattern.
On a local island in April
On a local island, April heat shapes the day: life starts early, slows after lunch and picks up in the cooler evening. Take Dhiffushi, on the eastern rim of Kaafu Atoll and 40 to 50 minutes from Malé by shared speedboat. As the easternmost inhabited island, it sees the Maldives’ first sunrise, and an early beach walk before about 8am is the most comfortable part of an April day. See the best time to visit Dhiffushi for the island’s month-by-month view.
Staying cool, the local way
- Shade first. Plan beach and snorkelling time for the morning and late afternoon. Midday is for lunch, a nap or a shady café.
- Drink more than you think. Carry a refillable bottle and top it up at your guesthouse.
- Dress for heat and respect. Away from the bikini beach, cover shoulders and knees. Loose cotton or linen, long skirts, wide trousers and light long-sleeved shirts are cooler than tight clothes. The local island etiquette guide explains the dress code.
- Cover up on the water. A rash vest saves your back on long snorkel trips, and a boat with a canopy helps on open sea.
Packing notes for April

Questions people ask
Is April a good time to visit the Maldives?
Yes, for most travellers. April brings mostly sunny days, calm and very warm seas, and good snorkelling and diving, while the peak-season crowds thin out after Easter. The Maldives Meteorological Service calls it a transition month, so expect some heavy showers, especially later in the month. It is a sensible choice if you want dry-season weather at better value.
Is April the hottest month in the Maldives?
It is usually the hottest month, or very close to it. The Maldives Meteorological Service describes March and April as the warmest period of the year, lasting until the southwest monsoon arrives in mid-May. Afternoons sit around 31 to 32°C with high humidity and lighter winds. The sea is about 29°C. Plan outdoor time for mornings and late afternoons.
Does it rain in the Maldives in April?
Some. April is drier than the southwest monsoon months but wetter than February. Rain usually comes as short, heavy showers or storms in the afternoon or evening, followed by sunshine. Met Service reports show April rainfall varies widely from year to year. Showers become more likely towards the end of the month, as the southwest monsoon approaches.
Is the sea calm in the Maldives in April?
Mostly, yes. For most of April the sea is calm, clear and warm, which makes speedboat transfers, sandbank trips and snorkelling easy. In some years the first changes towards the southwest monsoon bring stronger winds and choppier water in the last week or so. If smooth crossings matter, travel earlier in the month and leave a spare half-day before your flight.
Can you surf in the Maldives in April?
Yes. Surf forecasters and local surf guides generally put the season at about March to October, so April is early season. Waves are usually smaller and cleaner than in the June to August peak, with light winds and quieter line-ups, which suits intermediates. Swell is never guaranteed, so check a forecast shortly before you go.
What should I wear on a local island in April?
Loose, light clothes that cover shoulders and knees, such as cotton or linen trousers, long skirts and light shirts. They are cooler in the April heat than tight clothing and respect local norms. Swimwear is for the designated bikini beach only. Add a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a rash vest for snorkelling, and carry water at all times.
