Dhiffushi honeymoon: a local island guide for couples
Is a Maldives local island right for your honeymoon? Romantic trips, choosing a room, local customs, alcohol options, resort combos and rough costs on Dhiffushi.
Yes, Dhiffushi can make a lovely honeymoon if you want a real island rather than a private resort. You get sandbank dinners, sunset boat trips and the first sunrise in the Maldives at a fraction of resort prices, but there is no alcohol on the island and affection stays private. Many couples split the trip: a few nights here, then a resort to finish.
Is a local island right for your honeymoon?
Dhiffushi is a living Maldivian village of family-run guesthouses and small hotels, about 37 km north-east of Malé. It suits couples who want quiet beaches, local cafés and boat trips to empty sandbanks, with money left over for a few special evenings.
It may not suit you if a honeymoon means cocktails by the pool and an overwater villa. In that case, combine the two (see below). To compare islands, read Dhiffushi vs Maafushi vs Thulusdhoo.
Romantic things to do
Private sandbank dinner
The island’s signature romantic evening. A boat takes you out around sunset to a sandbank set with lanterns or candles. Listed prices start from about US$120 per person for three courses, with a barbecue option a little higher (2026 listings). Drinks are soft drinks, juices and mocktails. Times shift with the tide, so book a day or two ahead. See private sandbank dinner.
Sunset dolphin cruise
An easy evening on a traditional dhoni, usually 1.5 to 3 hours, from about US$20 per person. Spinner dolphins are often seen nearby but never guaranteed. Good crews keep a slow, steady course and never chase or cut through a pod. See sunset dolphin cruise.
Sunrise on the east beach
The sun usually rises between about 5.55am and 6.10am; arrive 20 minutes early for the colour before dawn. The shore is coral rubble and rock, so wear reef shoes, and cover shoulders and knees as it is a local beach. Read more about the east beach sunrise.
Overnight sandbank glamping
Boats usually leave late afternoon and return next morning, with dinner and breakfast included, from about US$200 per person. Ask the operator about safety kit, communications and their bad-weather plan before you book. See overnight sandbank glamping.
A resort day pass
Some resorts sell day passes, usually including the boat, a buffet lunch and use of the beach and pools, sometimes with drinks. Prices are on request. Meeru, the resort across the lagoon, does not sell day visits or packages to Dhiffushi guests, so ignore anyone offering one. Other resorts may. Book a day ahead and bring your passport or a copy. See resort day trip.

Choosing a room for a couple
Rooms range from about US$40 to US$180 or more a night before taxes; browse them on the stay page. When you message a guesthouse, ask:
- Is the room sea-facing, and on which side? The sunset side suits evenings, the sunrise side early risers.
- What size is the bed? Ask for a king or a true double.
- Is there a private balcony or terrace?
- How far is the bikini beach? Everything is 10 to 15 minutes on foot, but closer is nicer.
- Can you arrange a honeymoon touch, such as room decoration or a cake?
- Are green tax and T-GST included in the price?
- Do you arrange transfers and excursions?
Public affection on a local island
Dhiffushi is a Muslim community, and Maldivian culture is conservative about affection in public. Canadian government travel advice asks visitors to respect local religious and social traditions and to behave discreetly. In practice:
- Keep kissing and cuddling for your room, in the village and on the beach.
- Swimwear is fine on the bikini beaches, but local families pass by, so stay low-key there too.
- Cover up again before walking back into the village.
It isn’t about judging you; it’s simply how people live here. Our local island etiquette guide covers dress, Friday prayer and Ramadan.
Alcohol: where you can and can’t drink
There is no alcohol on Dhiffushi. It isn’t sold or served, you can’t bring your own, and customs at Velana International Airport confiscate it on arrival. UK government advice warns that drinking or being drunk outside resorts can lead to arrest and deportation.
Legal options off the island:
- Floating bar: licensed boats moored offshore near some local islands serve drinks. Ask your guesthouse whether one is running.
- Licensed safari boats: liveaboards with a permit can serve alcohol at sea.
- Resorts: a day pass where sold, or a resort stay to end your trip.
Combining Dhiffushi with a resort stay
A popular plan is three or four nights on Dhiffushi, then two or three at a resort.
- Do the local island first, so the trip ends slowly before your flight.
- Route through Malé. Speedboats link Dhiffushi and Malé in about 40 to 50 minutes; resorts usually arrange their own transfer from Velana. See how to get to Dhiffushi.
- Check the transfer type. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, while resort speedboats can run at any hour.
- Avoid Fridays for the ferry, which doesn’t run that day.
Our 3 days in Dhiffushi itinerary fits neatly before a resort stay.

Questions people ask
Is Dhiffushi good for a honeymoon?
Yes, if you want a relaxed, affordable island with beaches, sandbank trips and sunsets rather than full resort luxury. Couples can book private sandbank dinners and overnight glamping, and watch the first sunrise in the Maldives. The trade-offs are no alcohol on the island and modest behaviour in public. Many honeymooners add a resort stay at the end to enjoy both.
Can we drink alcohol on Dhiffushi?
No. Alcohol isn’t sold or served on the island, you can’t bring your own, and airport customs confiscate it on arrival. Drinking outside resorts can lead to arrest and deportation. For a drink, ask your guesthouse about a licensed floating bar nearby, book a day pass at a resort that sells them, or spend part of your trip at a resort.
Can we kiss or hold hands in public?
Keep affection discreet. Dhiffushi is a conservative Muslim community, and kissing or cuddling in the village or on the beach will make people uncomfortable, so save it for your room. Dress modestly in the village too, with shoulders and knees covered. Islanders are very welcoming, and a little care on your side goes a long way.
Can we visit Meeru resort from Dhiffushi?
No. Meeru, across the lagoon, does not sell day visits or day packages to guests staying on Dhiffushi, so don’t pay for a “Meeru day trip”. Some other resorts do sell day passes, usually with the boat, lunch and pool use. Ask your guesthouse or tour desk which are available and book at least a day ahead.
How many nights should we spend on Dhiffushi?
Three or four nights suits most couples. That leaves time for a sandbank dinner, a sunset cruise, a sunrise on the east beach and a lazy beach day, plus a spare day in case weather moves a boat trip. If you’re adding a resort, put Dhiffushi first and finish at the resort before your flight home.
